Sponsorship of “other relative” under the Family Class

Under R117(1)(h) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations , a Canadian citizen or permanent resident may sponsor one relative of any age if all of the conditions listed below are met:

• The relative is related by blood or adoption.
• The sponsor does not have a living relative who could be sponsored instead, such as a:
  • spouse
  • common-law partner
  • conjugal partner
  • son or daughter
  • parent
  • grandparent
  • orphaned sibling
  • orphaned nephew or niece
  • orphaned grandchild

• The sponsor does not have any relative (such as an aunt, uncle, or any of the relatives listed above) who is:
  • a Canadian citizen
  • a permanent resident
  • a registered Indian under the Indian Act

A person who is sponsored as a relative regardless of age or relationship is eligible to include their family members on their application.

The sponsor has to be at least 18 years old, live in Canada and meet the required income guidelines.
